All Day Whale Watch Lauren P

Today was a very early day for all of us in the AGLP group! We were woken up at 5:30am to get ready to go on an all day whale watch! At 7:00am we were loaded up into the boat and ready to begin our adventure! The captain told us that we should be making a stop at around 1:00pm. So even though we were anticipating the stop, we always kept our eyes open for whales! Unfortunately quite a few people got a little bit seasick, including me, but fortunately for us the nurse was always prepared for anything! Finally after a long car ride without seeing any whales we all stopped in a cool little town called Seldovia! We were all given about one hour to shop around and see if we could find anything neat. In Seldovia, they have neat little grocery stores, cool ice cream shops, and fantastic gift stores! But then at 2:30pm we were all loading back into the boat and we were leaving again, Fortunately for this time nobody got seasick. Although no whales were spotted so far, we did see some very cute sea otters swimming around right in front of our boat! Finally after a long day in a boat, the ride ended at 4:30pm and we were all back and in our campsite by 5:00pm, just in time for dinner! For dinner we had foil dinners which consisted of ground beef, hash browns, corn, broccoli, green beans, peas, onions, pepperoni, and multiple spices! Also since we have had four birthdays in the past week, we celebrated with cake and cupcakes! It was very delicious! After we finished washing dishes we had free time until bed time!

Whale Watch by Landrie L and Sydney B

This morning we woke up at 5:15am. It was freezing! We lazily got out of our tents, even with people telling us to hurry the whole time. After that we layered on clothes to keep us warm during the boat ride. We finally got to the boat and boarded, and everyone was looking very tired from the early morning. Most people wanted to sit inside the boat to keep warm because it was so windy. Soon after we boarded we set off with high hopes of seeing whales.

It took us quite a while to get out far enough into “whale country” and the ride there was really cold! I think a lot of people realized for the first time that they were prone to seasickness. You could tell that a lot of people weren’t feeling one hundred percent. At around noon we docked at a little town called Seldovia to take a break and walk around. We still hadn’t seen any whales yet and we were all kind of bummed.

After we got to Seldovia we walked around and most people got some ice cream and ate something. This town was very vacant; it looked uninhabited, like a ghost town or something. There was this one bridge that we walked on and it went through the rest of the historical houses that still stood after a really bad earthquake that ripped this little town apart.

Once everyone was back on the boat we set off again praying that we would finally see some whales. Most everyone was feeling a little better after having a little time on land, and were more attentive at watching for whales. We ended up being unlucky and didn’t see any whales today, but we saw a whole bunch of sea otters! At the end of the boat ride, I don’t think any of us were really that upset about not seeing whales, but were just happy to be back on land!
