Journalism Committee's Report (Hide)

The 4th of July by Matthew C

Today we got up around seven but it felt like nine. I don’t know why but it just felt later than it was. Some of us were more tired than everyone else because the junior leaders told us the night before that there was going to be a fireworks show at four in the morning. Most of us believed it and some of us set alarms, including my tent, but only a few people actually got up and waited for the fireworks. When we got up there were a lot of wry smiles from the junior leaders.

We got to have doughnuts and muffins for breakfast and it tasted so good and was a good change from the normal breakfast of cereal. We left the farm that we’re staying at around eight and we headed to the end of the spit to meet this awesome guy named Conrad. He is a botanist but he is really freaky smart about everything else under the earth!! He is like a walking encyclopedia!! I wish I were that smart! We saw everything from sea stars to crabs! And with each of these sea creatures Conrad had a story. His daughter, Eryn, was just a smart and she’s only seven!!! Well not as smart but smarter than some of us on the subject of sea creatures. We walked back and forth along the end of the spit while the tide was low. The difference in the tide from high to low is an average of 30ft.!!!

After we went tide pooling and the tide had risen we got into the vans and headed to a community picnic in a town that was twenty-one miles away. We apparently were NOT welcome, even though a local personally invited us. Ishtar was actually quite proud of our manners. This woman wrote an article about it saying that we didn’t bring a dish to pass and that were not part of the community and that she was disappointed in our leader. She was the only one who felt this way because the locals, with smiles, welcomed us.

After the disaster of a picnic we headed back to Homer so we had free time in the downtown area (it as the good part don’t worry). In the rain. For two hours. All the stores were closed. Are you catching my drift? It was boring.

We then drove down the road for the parade. It was the smallest parade I think any of us have ever seen!!! It was seriously thirty minutes, give or take. We watched the parade and went back to the campsite. Most of us had already eaten at subway but those of us who didn’t ate sandwiches. We are now meeting with our committees and just chilling. That’s about it from up here in Homer. We only have six more days here and then we’ll be back there in Marshall with you guys!!! Ok, see you soon!!! Bye!!!
