Free Day by Landrie L

This morning everyone was allowed to sleep in till we felt like it was time to wake up, which was nice for a change! The early risers were rewarded though with doughnuts that were really yummy! Some of the participants, junior leaders and adults got the opportunity to get up around four in the morning and go halibut fishing for the day, so most of us spent the day just hanging out around camp waiting till they got back. One of the activities that we did was a van contest on the beach. We all had an hour to build anything we wanted in the sand that related to our trip, with things found on the beach. There were a lot of cool entries, like a halibut and a whale made of kelp, an eagle, mermaids, and the winning entry, Mt. McKinley. After having sandwiches for lunch, everyone went down to the Spit for a while to do a little shopping. Everyone agrees that Homer is the best place for shopping! When we went back to camp we had the halibut that people caught that day for dinner. There was beer battered and baked, but I’d have to say that the beer battered halibut was my favorite! It was so delicious! Once we finished our dinner, we quickly set out on a nature hike we had planned on, before it started to rain. We met up with our new friend Conrad, who also is a botanist, and he took us around showing us a lot of different species of plants that are in Alaska along a trail. I thought that it was really interesting learning about the many uses that each one has! We got back to camp and everyone was pretty wet from the rain, and ready to go to bed, so we had a quick hug time and all headed off to bed. I was pretty sad about I though, because that meant that we only had one night left sleeping in tents, but I’m also kind of glad, because soon we’d be back in Michigan!
