What a Day! by Jazmin Y

Today we went to the farmers market, museum of the north, laundry mat and the 10k race.  We arrived at the farmers market around 9:00am. We were shocked to see so many stands and wonderful shops all around. The amount of people that showed up was amazing! The really neat thing was that most of the items that were sold there was made by the seller. There were items anywhere from jewelry to blankets and handbags. You could even find food and beverages at the market as well! We loved all the different options that you could find. All in all the market was another fun adventure.

When we went to the museum it was very interesting. Our task was to find 10 interesting facts. The difficult part was finding the interesting ones that hide inside the other facts. It was a big challenge for anyone that was trying to find the ones that were interesting. One of the really cool and wroth wild parts of the museum is there was something for everyone. There was an eight, foot tall bear that awed most of the visitors that walked through. Then there was the TV globe that showed you how the world evolved throughout the Alaskan period. When you walk further into the museum you would then see many animals such as the whale, walrus, polar bear, and many more. The best part for me was seeing all the different items the natives and such used to kill for their food and shelter. The museum was something many of us are use to but we will never forget.

We walk through the laundry mat as beginners but walk out as something much more. It might not be a big deal to you ladies and gentleman back home but for us in Alaska right now it’s a new experience. Many of us have never done laundry a day in our life, and some of us have. The point is WE DID OUR OWN LAUNDRY!!!! No one really had any troubles with the order we had to do it in. It was more of the keeping up and paying attention part. The prices were different on where we went and much more expensive. No wonder Ishtar said to bring $20 in quarters. Taylor K said that at the laundry mat she had gone to the tokens cost $2.20 a token. But you had to have 3 tokens for the washer and one token for the dryer. On the other hand the laundry mat I went to you only had to pay $4 for a double loader and $7 for a triple. As you can imagine the single loaders were much cheaper. The difference is you only had to have one token and it was used for the washer. The drying cycle you had to use the rest of your quarters. Now we know how to do our own laundry, which many of you parents will be happy to hear.

The 10k race was a blast! All of us got a medal and all of us finished. We all started out in a spot we thought would be a good starting position for us. Some went up in front, some in the middle, and some near the end. When the gun shot a loud boom into the air we all new we were starting. As we run, jog, or walk we all finish one mile by one mile. As you got to the middle of the race you would come to see water gun, hoses, and buckets of water being blasted at you to cool you off. Bottle’s of water was being handed out every mile or so and the more you got to the finish food showed up! You had choices like ice cream and watermelon. All of it was yummy so none of us really cared. Anyways our day went very well. Thank you for reading, log on again for the next update. We love and miss you all.

Busy Day by Sydney B

We had a really busy day, we all woke up and went to the farmers market then we went to the laundry mat!!! We went to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum of the North. I interviewed 5 people about what they thought about the day. I interviewed two of the student participants, Isabel S. and T.J. R. Isabel said, “ I really liked the exhibits and the artwork. The farmers market was amazing, the dolls, woodwork and the food were amazing. I’ve never been to a laundry mat before but I really didn’t like it at all. The run was difficult and it was really good to finish. The costumes at the race were really interesting.” T.J. R. told me with not so much excitement, “ The farmers market had good food. The museum exhibits were dry, I only liked the hands on exhibits. The laundry mat was dirty and it took forever. The race was really fun and kind of long.”
I interviewed two junior leaders Emily M. and Faith T. I also asked them about the day, their thoughts and feelings. Emily M. very tiredly told me, “ The day was really busy. There wasn’t any down time. I really hate doing laundry. The run was so fun I liked going in and having people know who we are. While I was running my group and I cashed a block party and got some free food. I was happy for jazzercising and getting pumped up before we ran.” When I asked Faith she was very happy to talk about the day, “ I thought the farmers market was neat and it was cool that all the people were local. I liked the Museum of the North it because I learned more facts that I missed out on in eighth grade. The laundry mat was very hot inside and it nice that I had enough time to finish my video. I liked the race because the jazzercise pumped me and most everyone else up, so much fun, I really liked dancing before the race it helped a lot.”
I also asked two of the drivers Paul and Mark. Paul had a lot of things to say and he said everything with a smile, “ The farmers market was very fun and I’ve been to a lot of markets and this one was very upscale compared to those. The artwork, the handmade crafts and the bake goods were really cool. The Museum of the North was fantastic, I don’t think that there was enough time, I was surprised how we put the Japanese that were living in Alaska into concentration camps just not as bad as the ways the Jewish were treated. I was really glad that we went to the laundry mat because our van was really starting to stink. The race was really fun it was my first race I ran with Linda.” Mark was more than happy to answer the questions for me, “ on a scale of one to five, five being the best. The farmers market was a five, and the museum. I really enjoyed the geology exhibits at the museum. The laundry mat would be a negative two, it was too hot and it took too long. The race was a five and it was cool to see all the participants cheering everyone on through the finish line.”
