“Let me try some!” I had shouted over my shoulder, before turning around to walk backwards slowly and carefully on the trail. I held my hand out and stared in slight confusion as the white, little balls were dropped into my hand. Supposedly these were the root of the Chocolate Lilly, but they reminded me a lot of the Dipping Dots ice-cream. I’d never heard of a plant with roots that were a clump of small round balls.
With a shrug, I threw my head back and popped a handful of the harmless bulbs into my mouth. At first, I tasted nothing, then a small amount of bitterness… Then a bit more bitterness… A bit more… Suddenly I was slammed with a bitter taste that left me coughing and spitting. I took a mouthful of water from my bottle and swished it around before spitting back out on the side of the trail. “It wasn’t that bad, was it?” the same person who’d given me the plant asked. I could only nod in response as I kept gulping water.
“Great,” I muttered afterwards to no one in particular, running my tongue on the roof of my mouth. “Now I’ll never get this taste out of my mouth.”
